It’s been five months since fiery Maggie Driscoll, the no-nonsense mother-in-law of fan favourite Eva Price, debuted on Coronation Street.
In that time she’s certainly made her mark and proven she’s not to be messed with. Actress Pauline McLynn, who plays the new Rovers Return owner, warns she may have just met her match however.
Maggie’s family were left reeling recently, as they found out her grandson Will [Lucas Hodgson-Wale], 16, was being groomed by his older athletics coach Megan Walsh [Beth Nixon]. Next week the claws are out, as Maggie makes it clear to predator Megan she is not welcome.
Pauline, 63, says her character’s plan to get pregnant Megan out of the way could land her in trouble with the police though, as an assault accusation is made and battle lines are drawn. She tells us: “Maggie is a woman of action. I mean, there are matters with the police over the grooming of the grandson, but I think she feels that the law moves at a very slow pace, and there’s rules that she does not have to follow.

“They also have to be really careful of how they approach any situation whereas Maggie’s more of a blunt instrument. She just thinks, ‘look, I’m going to sort it out, I’ll find her. I’ll warn her off’.”
When Megan reports Maggie to the police for assault, Pauline says her character isn’t deterred with her plan to make her leave. Pauline says: “She obviously denies it. She dismisses it as kind of nonsense, a waste of everyone’s time to be complaining about this.
“A little bit of rough and tumble, things escalated a little, let’s get on with it. You know? She’s not a woman who backs down easily.” Pauline says that Megan and Maggie are alike in their determination to get what they want, paving the way for some dramatic scenes as they go head-to-head.

She says: “I think to be honest with you, she’s met her match very much in Megan, who will stop at nothing to get what she wants and is a brilliant liar like Maggie is. They’re quite well matched like that.
So it’s really wonderful to see two women from opposite sides of an argument having a proper go at one another. And of course, solidifying Maggie’s absolute total loyalty to family and she will do pretty much anything to keep it intact or safe.”
Since the Driscolls arrived in October last year, the family have been at the centre of big twists including Will’s attack on Megan’s boyfriend Daniel Osbourne, the truth about Maggie’s late husband’s death, with a flashback episode revealing she killed him, as well as the confirmation that Maggie could be killed off in the upcoming murder twist, teased in a recent flashforward scene. With Maggie’s fate yet to be confirmed, another huge secret is set to rock the family as Maggie continues to hide the truth about her son Ben Driscoll’s biological father.

Viewers recently discovered that Maggie had had an affair years earlier with none other than Corrie legend Jim McDonald. Following Jim’s recent death, it will soon be revealed that Jim is the real father of Ben [Aaron McCusker]. With Ben yet to uncover the truth, and Maggie not having told anyone, Pauline says there will be turmoil ahead.
She says: “That’s a whole bag of hornets that’s just waiting to be unleashed. It’s a really big secret and I feel sorry for her sometimes in terms of growing up as a young mother, it was a certain time, a certain era, it’s no wonder that it’s never been common knowledge that she had some sort of happenings with Jim McDonald.
“Ben has made some remarks that hit a nerve and as bad as we think this turmoil is, I suspect there’ll be a lot more!” Secrets aside, Pauline says she’s excited for fans to see the “devious” side to Maggie as she tries to protect grandson Will from Megan.

Pauline says: “No one knows exactly where Megan has gone to hide and Maggie finds out in a very underhanded way. I was quite pleased when I saw that! But she does what nobody else would do, she goes to all kinds of lengths to find out wherever Megan is and then she goes to confront her because nothing else is working.
“So, there’s some more splendid rows to be had, splendid fighting and all very enjoyable to do. Even including, I’m not going to lie, by accident or otherwise as is the way of Maggie’s life, there are physical fights. She’s not above getting her hands dirty at all.”
As Maggie’s plan initially fails and she’s warned away from Megan, Pauline says that Megan’s refusal to leave only encourages her character to take further action. Pauline reveals: “I think people would be disappointed if we didn’t see her having another go, having not had any satisfaction from the first go of running the woman out of town.
“She’ll just go again and keep going until it happens, that’s if Megan doesn’t disappear first or whatever. Even then, you’ll see that Maggie has ways of finding people, simple as that. Like a mini dark web for herself, without the technical expertise, but there you go.”
