Police say one person has been found dead following a house fire in Mississauga at a residence officers initially thought was empty.

Peel Regional Police spoke to reporters on Tuesday and confirmed one person has been found dead after flames tore through a home on Select Court in Mississauga around 10:40 p.m. on Monday night.

Police say there was an explosion at the home, and video taken at the scene posted online shows the home fully engulfed in flames as fire crews battling the blaze. Around 10 fire trucks and two command trucks responded to the two-alarm fire.

Police at first said no one was home at the time, but the body of an unidentified person has since been recovered. Police have not released any details about the victim.

Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire and the explosion. The remains of the home are unsafe, and heavy machinery is being brought in  on Wednesday to aid in the investigation.

Peel Regional Police spokesperson Const. Tyler Bell-Morena said the two-storey home is occupied by tenants upstairs and in a basement suite. But the occupants were out of the country at the time of the fire and have since been found safe.

Police said the victim may have been someone looking after the property while the owners were away, and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Anyone with information about this incident can contact Peel Regional Police by calling 905-453-3311. Anonymous tips may also be submitted to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by visiting www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.
