RCMP have executed search warrants at the homes of former Calgary mayor Jyoti Gondek and a sitting city councillor, in an investigation that began in October.
Ms. Gondek, who lost her bid for re-election that same month, told The Globe and Mail in a text message Tuesday that officers had executed a warrant at her home and seized her cellphone. She did not say when the search of her home happened.
“I’ve been fully cooperative and respectful of the legal process,” she wrote.
“At the same time, this has been very invasive, and my lawyer and I will be reviewing it closely to ensure it was justified.”
The case is being handled by the RCMP’s northwest strategic division, a federal policing unit that is distinct from the Alberta RCMP. The nature of the investigation is unclear. Jessica Murphy, a spokesperson for the northwest strategic division, confirmed there is a continuing probe but did not provide any further details.
Ms. Murphy said the investigation is related to “a referral we received from Calgary Police Services in October 2025.”
Emma Poole, a spokesperson for the Calgary Police Service, said the force referred a complaint to the RCMP last October. She, too, did not provide details on the nature of the investigation.
Earlier in the day, long-time Calgary city councillor Andre Chabot said the RCMP had visited his home last Thursday and seized his devices. He said he doesn’t believe he’s the subject of the investigation.
“I’m hoping that somehow it’ll result in something that they can utilize. But at this point, I have no idea what they’re investigating. But I’m fully co-operating with them,” Mr. Chabot said.
“I have nothing to hide.”
Former councillor Sean Chu – who did not run for re-election in the October municipal election – said through his lawyer, Shamsher Kothari, that he has co-operated with the investigation. Mr. Kothari did not say whether the former councillor’s home was searched or if his belongings were seized.
Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas told reporters he hasn’t been contacted by police.
Calgary residents elected a new mayor and city council in mid-October last year. Ms. Gondek, who succeeded long-time mayor Naheed Nenshi in 2021, placed third among mayoral candidates after a tumultuous tenure defined by problems with aging water infrastructure, an issue that continues to dog city hall.
