Cloverdale-based Mobile Meals program feeds seniors across Surrey, Langley, White Rock

A meal delivery program in Cloverdale is feeding more than 200 seniors a day.

The Mobile Meals program at Storehouse Community Hub Society feeds seniors in various spots across the region, including routes in Langley, Cloverdale, Fleetwood, Newton, Guildford, South Surrey, and White Rock.

Lindsay Rempel, event director for Storehouse, said the Mobile Meals program delivers fresh meals Monday to Friday. On Fridays seniors also have the option to order frozen meals to cover their weekend.

“Most of the routes continue to grow,” said Rempel. “Just like everything else, the need is always there.”

She said the Mobile Meals program grows at a slower pace than other programs, because there’s a lot of turnover.

“Seniors will join the program for a period of time and then they’ll move into a home, or they’ll go into the hospital, or, unfortunately, they’ll pass away.”

Rempel said while the turnover is regular, the numbers aren’t going down.

“We are still seeing an increase in need for our Mobile Meals services,” she noted. “The program is very busy and growing, just not as exponentially as food bank.”

The daily meals consist of a main course, sides, and a dessert. Meals cost $8 each, with subsidies available for those who qualify.

Rempel added volunteers pack the meals daily and volunteer drivers dart around on the various routes through the city. She said each driver does about 10 to 15 deliveries.

As such, they’re always looking for volunteer drivers and volunteers to help with food packing.

“When our routes grow, we cap them off,” she explained. “It’s all delivered by volunteers and we want to keep (total delivery time) under two hours.”

She said once a volunteer gets their driving route, they stay on that same one because they get to know the seniors whom they’re delivering to.

“The client’s really appreciate that,” Rempel said. “It’s more than just delivering a meal. They get to form a connection. They get to check in on the client. A lot of our clients don’t get a lot of interaction outside of their meal being delivered. Some days (our drivers) are the only person they get interact with.”

She noted the seniors really appreciate their driver’s efforts and they usually form friendships with them.

Rempel explained that, a lot of times, it’s the children of the clients who sign their parents up for the Mobile Meals program. Many of the kids live out of town.

“They’re not able to be around to help their parents, so it gives them peace of mind knowing (their parents) are getting a healthy nutritious meal delivered and someone is there to check in on them daily.”
