According to NFL.com’s Eric Edholm, the Kansas City Chiefs have improved their power ranking after the first two weeks of free agency.

“So much depends on Patrick Mahomes’ ability to return to full strength after a torn ACL — and to do so by his Week 1 goal — but the Chiefs are starting to act like a team that expects to contend again,” Edholm wrote. “It wouldn’t be shocking at all to see the Chiefs use one of their two first-round picks (Nos. 9 and 29) on a cornerback. We’ll wait to see how they address that need, but Andy Reid’s team was destined to move up from the end-of-season rankings one way or another, even if it still has unfinished business.”

Kansas City was previously ranked 19th amongst the 32 teams by NFL.com before the start of free agency. The additions of star running back Kenneth Walker III, defensive lineman Khyiris Tonga, and defensive back Alohi Gilliam have played a significant role in the team’s early roster improvements.

The Chiefs are still being judged on Patrick Mahomes’ recovery from last year’s knee surgery. The addition of Justin Fields as the backup quarterback has lessened the need to rush back the two-time league MVP.
