RICHMOND, Va. – Charleston’s Loran Appel and North Carolina A&T’s Ekaterina Prokhorova locked up runner-up finishes to secure respective CAA Men’s and Women’s Golfer of the Week honors on Wednesday.
MEN’S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Loran Appel, Charleston
Junior | Numansdorp, Netherlands
Appel posted a runner-up finish at the Hootie at Bulls Bay, the top Charleston finisher in the individual standings with an 11-under finish. The junior paced the field following the opening round (-8), recording the lowest individual round of the season for the Cougars. He led the field in total birdies (17) and par 3 scoring (2.67). The Cougars won the tournament in record-breaking fashion, turning in a 35-under and outlasting four ranked teams, including a six-stroke victory over second-place South Carolina. The Cougars set a new program low round record with a 23-under opening round and a program 36-hole record going -41 through two rounds.
WOMEN’S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Ekaterina Prokhorova, N.C. A&T
Senior | Moscow, Russia
Prokhorova finished in a tie for second at William & Mary’s Kingsmill Intercollegiate. She matched Dartmouth’s Olivia Cong with a 6-over 222. The senior battled to an even par in the opening round, one of seven golfers to shoot even or better in at least one round of the Tribe’s home event. After a tough start to the first round, the Moscow, Russia native birdied on five of the final 11 holes to break even. Prokhorova sank for par on the last seven holes of the second round to card a four-over 76 before notching five birdies in the final round.
