GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Began back in 1979 when the Edmonton Oilers started their inaugural season in the NHL. Edmonton was part of the WHA previously and ended up securing Wayne Gretzky as their star player with expectations unknown. What an incredible time and experience those initial Oilers teams were turning into Stanley Cup Champions. Since 1990 Edmonton fans have realized that the genie is already out of the bottle. Right Mr. McDavid?

OWNERS WON’T CO-OPERATE

Re: Federal Liberal gun buyback program. The only reason they recovered so many so far is because of the stock they received from gun stores. Ninety-nine per cent of law-abiding sports shooters or hunters have not, and nor do we plan on it. This is an infringement on our rights.

LARRY MCQUIGGAN

(The program does not seem to be going smoothly. It would be better to stop the flow of illegal guns from south of the border.)

SOLAR SOLUTION

Re “Iran war shows our need for pipelines” (Editorial, March 10): Oil is a wild ride and it always has been. That’s my takeaway from the skyrocketing oil prices following the U.S.–Israel attack on Iran. This editorial claims that “oil dominates global energy markets and will for decades to come.” Will it, though? Fossil fuels have enjoyed decades of dominance, but the cheapest way to generate energy is now with solar panels. I’m no economist, but business-minded folks tell me that people don’t like to spend money. Does Canada really want to double down on the volatility of coupling our economy to oil and gas when there are cheaper ways to generate energy?

MARY BLAKE ROSE

(Solar isn’t enough. The demand and need for oil is a fact and will remain so.)

LNG LOOKING GOOD

Re “Iran war shows our need for pipelines” (Editorial, March 10): It doesn’t matter what politicians (re Elizabeth May … “oil is dead”) or energy consultants say about the demise of oil and other fuels, black gold continues to dominate, as the editorial noted, and will continue to do so well into the next few decades. As many knowledgeable, and realistic, energy analysts know well, the logical replacement for oil is natural gas, for reasons noted, and TMX and LNG have already started delivering.

(It’s an important point you raise about LNG, which Canada cannot miss out on the opportunity to export.)
