A rescue operation is underway in Montreal’s West Island after two men fell into a river Thursday afternoon.
One was rescued, but the other is still missing.
Montreal police say a 911 call came in at around 2:35 p.m. about two young men in distress who had fallen into the Rivière des Prairies.
Police responded to the call in the Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève borough near Du Pont Street, not far from Jacques-Bizard Boulevard and the bridge connecting Île-Bizard to the island of Montreal.
Police say the men had ventured out onto the ice when it gave way.
One of the men was rescued and was conscious when transported to hospital where he is recovering, police say.
The search for the second man is still underway. Montreal police, firefighters and Urgences-santé are on the scene.
Police are patrolling the river banks, the water and the air with a drone. While the incident is considered accidental, investigators are speaking with witnesses, police say.
