Conservative candidate for Surrey mayor was in court fight for MLA seat

The Conservative Party of Surrey’s candidate for mayor this fall is lawyer Honveer Singh Randhawa, who nearly beat the NDP’s Garry Begg to become MLA in Surrey-Guildford in the last provincial election.

Begg’s 22-vote win in the riding — a key victory for the NDP in October 2024 — was subject of legal challenge by Randhawa, who alleged potential violations of the Election Act. Randhawa’s case in B.C. Supreme Court, which focused on how mail-in ballots from the Argyll Lodge care facility were recorded, was dropped last December.

Now he’s gunning to win the Oct. 17 civic election in what looks to be a crowded field of candidates for mayor.

Randhawa says he’ll campaign for safer streets and lower taxes.

“Surrey deserves new leadership that puts families first,” Randhawa says in a news release sent Thursday, March 26.

“Over the past few years, taxes have gone up, violent crime and extortion has spiraled out of control, road planning hasn’t kept up resulting in congestion getting worse, and drug den housing is being pushed into neighborhoods across our city. Currently life in Surrey has gotten worse, and people want common-sense change at Surrey City Hall.”

He says he’d establish Surrey Home Protection Fund to compensate damages “for verified RTB judgements that are deemed unrecoverable, as I strongly believe that Surrey home owners and good tenants should not be penalized for property damages caused by bad tenants.”

Randhawa would also create a parent-citizens committee to work with City of Surrey public library officials and Surrey School Board officials to “review age-appropriate materials, strengthen transparency and get SOGI materials out of Surrey classrooms.”

A candidate launch event is planned for 5:30 p.m. Sunday, March 29 at Empress Banquet Hall #201-8166 128 St., Surrey.

In February, Conservative Electors Association launched with the naming of six candidates for Surrey city council including Lita Cabal, Ricky Bajwa, James Yu, Rasinder Kaur, Holly Verchere and Cheney Cloke, all on the Conservative Party of Surrey slate, now with Randhawa as the candidate for mayor.
