A new 32,000-square-foot grocery store has opened in the Greater Toronto Area.
On March 26, Food Basics launched at 400 Queen St. W. in Brampton.
The unveiling comes after the store’s former location at 1 Bartley Bull Pkwy, less than five kilometres away, closed on March 25.
The team from the old outpost has moved to the new location, along with 40 new staff members. The Queen Street West store is the second of eight to open in 2026, according to Metro.
“We are excited to be able to bring a fresher and newer Food Basics to Brampton community, offering a more enjoyable shopping experience for residents to save on quality products,” said John Manax, vice-president of operations, Food Basics.
“No matter where you live, people are always looking for ways to save. Residents who may be first-time shoppers at Food Basics will get to know us as a discount grocer that is a reliable source for fresh, always in-stock, healthy food at great prices.”
The store opens daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a tailored grocery selection that includes locally-sourced products, fresh meat and produce, along with fresh BBQ chicken.
To celebrate the grand opening, gift bags were given to the first 250 guests and samples will be available throughout the day.
“Our main goal is to provide our customers with the best discount shopping experience possible with the most value at the lowest prices possible,” said Jonathan Yap, store manager, Food Basics.
Food Basics currently operates 153 stores across Ontario.
In March 2025, it launched its seventh Mississauga location at 4154 Confederation Pkwy.
The more than 29,000-square-foot space features an extensive international foods section, locally-sourced products, fresh meat and produce.
However, Food Basics isn’t the only grocer that opened in the Greater Toronto Area this week.
Freshpro Foodmart, with a focus on authentic Asian ingredients, began welcoming guests to its latest Mississauga location on March 26.
Located at 7333 Goreway Dr., the new store is Freshpro Foodmart’s third location in the area.
The grocer can also be found in Richmond Hill at 10488 Yonge St. and in Brampton at 9125 Airport Rd.
Next month, Canada’s largest Asian grocery store chain, T&T, will open its latest outpost in Erin Mills.
Located between Dundas Street West and Highway 403 at 3060 Ridgeway Dr. in Mississauga, the upcoming location will officially be unveiled on April 9. The new store will be 40,000 square feet and become the second T&T location in Mississauga.
The chain’s largest Ontario store, a 66,000-square-foot outpost at Empress Walk Shopping Mall, is also slotted for a 2026 opening.
Located just steps away from the North York Centre subway station at 5095 Yonge St., the store will feature more than 500 T&T private label items, including pantry staples, dim sum and trendy snacks.
Happy shopping!
