Yaxel Lendeborg was one of the best players in the country this year, making Sporting News’ All-American First Team. He’s a 6-9, 230-pound do-everything forward with a massive 7-4 wingspan who drove winning at a high level at Michigan, helping transform the Wolverines into a serious contender. Now it’s time for him to test his talents in the NBA.Â
Opinions on Lendeborg are somewhat mixed. Nobody can argue with the fact that he dominated college, but there is some heated debate about where he should be picked in the draft, ranging from a top 10 pick to completely outside the lottery. His combination of production, versatility, and immediate readiness makes him a polarizing prospect in a draft loaded with high-upside freshmen.

Lendeborg is a versatile forward with a great frame and an impressive 7-4 wingspan. He’s able to impact the game on both sides of the ball with his combination of tools and feel.Â
Offensively, Lendeborg is an efficient scorer. He is an excellent finisher at the rim, showing nice touch at the basket and good athleticism in recording 26 dunks on the year.

Lendeborg is also a good passer, particularly for his size. His numbers are down since his UAB days but still impressive this season at 3.2 assists to only 1.1 turnover per game. His vision from the high post and short roll stands out, often making precise finds to cutters or spotting up shooters. Some of his reads are special. If you missed his 80 foot alley-oop pass in the NCAA tournament, it was worth checking out.Â

Lendeborg’s 3-point shot was a bit shaky earlier in his college career at UAB. Since transferring to Michigan though, he’s hit a solid 36 percent of his shots on good volume. He’s not a lights-out shooter, but he’s also not the type of player that you would willingly leave open.Â
Lendeborg is playing out of position this season as a small forward due to the talented frontcourt duo of Morez Johnson and Aday Mara. He’s more suited to be a power forward in the NBA. Despite that hurdle, Lendeborg has been very impactful defensively. He can guard multiple positions, moving his feet well and having the length to hold up in different matchups. He has great block and steal rates, possessing quick hands and providing some weak side rim protection. And he is a great rebounder who can grab-and-go off opponent misses.

Yaxel Lendeborg weaknesses
The biggest knock against Lendeborg is going to be his age. He’s 23 years old, which is ancient in draft terms. He was a late bloomer who was more into video games than basketball for most of his childhood. While he has good physical tools, he’s not an elite athlete.Â
Lendeborg is a good defender, but he can have lapses of focus away from the ball. He’s not a true 1-through-5 stopper, as he has trouble with quicker guards and wings. His lateral quickness is average, which can be exposed in space.
Lendeborg isn’t an elite shot creator. He’s not the type of guy that you can build an entire offense around, which are the prospects that usually get taken early in the draft. He projects more as an important supporting piece on a good team.Â
There is a ceiling on Lendeborg. He won’t be a top 10 player in the league. That said, his feel, leadership, and ability to fill multiple statistical categories give him a very safe projection as a long-term contributor. He will be a nice two-way rotation player with a high floor.Â

Yaxel Lendeborg NBA Mock Draft projection
Mock Draft projection:Â Late lottery / middle first round
There are too many talented freshmen in this draft class for Lendeborg to go in the first 10 picks. He could be called anywhere after that though, particularly to a team at the end of the lottery that is above the ground floor of their rebuild and looking for someone who can contribute immediately.Â
Sporting News’ Elliott Pohnl has Lendeborg going No. 18 to the Grizzlies in his mock draft. That’s near his floor. He will be taken somewhere in the first 25 picks.Â

Yaxel Lendeborg NBA player comparison
Plays like:Â Thad Young
Young was a versatile forward who could do a little bit of everything in the NBA, leading to his legendary placement in a graphic alongside Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James. Young was a good defender who could guard multiple positions, had some sweet passing chops, and had great touch at the rim.Â
Lendeborg has a chance to be a nice type of hybrid point forward that Young was back in his day. Young was never a terrific shooter, but could hit the open ones. He was the type of player who could fill up multiple categories in the stat sheet and was a special passer at his height.Â
Young wasn’t an All-NBA type of player, but he was a good starter for several playoff teams. He was a great connective piece, making superstars around him better.Â
That is the type of winning impact that Lendeborg can have. Like Young, Lendeborg brings size, vision, rebounding, and versatility that can elevate a roster without needing the spotlight. He doesn’t project as the best player on a team, but he can be a high-level starter that holds everything together.
