Residents have turned Brampton catchbasins into art.
Aspiring artists are invited to spruce up their neighbourhood by dealing with utilitarian catchbasins.
The art project is called “From Streets to Streams” and asks for submissions to beautify the catchbasins, which are also known as storm drains or sewer grates.
Now in its fourth year, the initiative is also meant to raise awareness about stormwater management and pollution prevention while connecting residents with local waterways.
Brampton’s stormwater management system collects, moves and manages runoff from melting rain or snow.
Unlike wastewater, which receives treatment before release, stormwater flows directly into local rivers, creeks and stormwater ponds before reaching Lake Ontario.
“Lake Ontario provides drinking water for over nine million people, including Brampton residents. Everyday activities such as washing cars in driveways or using excess road salt during winter can pollute stormwater and harm the local waterways,” according to information supplied by the city.
The call for artists opens March 30 and closes May 1. Artists interested in participating can learn more and apply at brampton.ca/catchbasinart.
A selection committee will choose six artists to paint 12 catchbasins in neighbourhoods and parks across Brampton this summer. Murals will highlight how water travels from city streets to local waterways and encourage residents to help prevent pollution.
“Through the city’s stormwater programs, the Catchbasin Art Project helps residents understand the role stormwater plays in protecting Brampton’s environment,” the city says.
