This past Sunday, a group of people gathered for a charity walk in Brooklyn, New York’s Prospect Park. At the beginning of the loop, a few participants noticed a green Uber Eats bag under a bench.

The parkgoers felt like there was something off about the bag, so they went to investigate. As they opened it up, they found two cats inside, who’d clearly been abandoned.

“I do believe that whoever dumped these cats … wanted someone to find them,” cat rescuer Dana Heis told The Dodo. “I think it was a situation [where] they had no choice.”

The parkgoers, not wanting to leave the cats all alone under the bench, ended up carrying the bag with them for the entirety of the 5-kilometer loop. As they were walking, they realized someone else had just found an orange cat, who they quickly realized had initially also been in the Uber Eats bag.

“At the end of the walk … they put them all down and the orange cat jumped back into the bag with the other two,” Heis said.

The people who’d discovered the cats got in touch with Heis, who immediately agreed to take them in. When the kitties first arrived at Heis’ rescue facility, they were understandably a bit shaken up.

“They were pretty nervous,” Heis said. “It had been quite a day, obviously.”

Heis got to work getting the cats vaccinated and treated with flea and deworming medication. As the three babies slowly realized they were finally safe, they started to seem more at ease.

“They had been very friendly and sweet with everyone,” Heis said.

Heis decided to name the cats Grubhub, Seamless and DoorDash. Within just a few hours, Heis had placed all three in foster homes.

“They were just so thankful to be back indoors,” Heis said. “They clearly were not outdoor cats.”

While these cats had a happy ending to their story, it easily could have ended with them getting lost or worse. It’s important to keep in mind that there are many resources people could try utilizing before they resort to leaving animals in a park.

“The better option for anyone that can’t keep their pets anymore is to take them to the city shelter or to a vet hospital … rather than just leaving them out there and hoping for the best,” Heis said.

While DoorDash has found a long-term caretaker, Seamless and Grubhub are looking for someone who can either foster them for an extended period or adopt them. Given how sweet and adorable these kitties are, Heis is sure they’ll make a beautiful addition to someone’s family.

“It’s very important to me that feel safe and loved and know they’ve landed in good hands,” Heis said.
