Belfast fighter’s former coach at amateur level hails the impact of his protege on the sport

Michael Conlan’s career was one of many highs and so many agonising near misses which culminated in his retirement from professional boxing after defeat to Kevin Walsh in Belfast last weekend.
Conlan’s final tilt at the professional world title he craved so much came up short, but it should not overshadow his glittering amateur career, from an Olympic bronze medal to becoming Ireland’s first male World Championship gold medallist in 2015.
