The Salvation Army is putting on a Good Friday service in Winnipeg with their created Easter cantata.

“This Good Friday, we’re putting on an Easter cantata,” says Jim Moulton, the Band Master at the Salvation Army Heritage Park Temple. “We’ve been doing this since 1962. It started off as just a Passion play drama, and has evolved into what we now call a cantata.”

For those unfamiliar, a cantata is a multi-movement vocal composition featuring soloists, a choir, and instrumental accompaniment.

“We’ve had another change and added congregation participation.”

Focusing on what Jesus did during the Easter Weekend

The Good Friday Easter cantata will take place on April 3 at 7:00 p.m. at the Salvation Army Heritage Park Temple, located on 825 School Road in Winnipeg. 

“It’s a combination of Easter music. Some of it is more contemporary while some is more traditional. This year, I’m looking after the musical aspect, and my son Andrew is doing the drama side.”

According to Moulton, Andrew wrote this year’s drama for Easter, with a contemporary spin. Each year the team aim to find a different perspective to share the age-old story in. 

“The drama cantata is so important to me because it tells this story of God’s love. The story of mercy, redemption, and by doing the Easter cantatas, it’s a way for me to experience the story anew.”

This event is free and open to everyone. No registration is required. 

“We’ve built this rich tradition of putting on these plays. It’s a labour of love. It’s a group effort and everyone enjoys participating. It’s something we look forward to each year.”
