Edmonton police say a 33-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to stab officers.
EPS says around 10:30 p.m. on March 1, a Transit Peace Officer and two EPS officers were conducting a proactive patrol of Corona LRT Station when they noticed a man openly consuming alcohol.
The officers reportedly approached the man, at which point, he pulled out a concealed knife and tried to stab them.
No injuries were reported from the altercation, and the man was taken into custody.
Through an investigation, police learned that the man was connected to an alleged robbery at a central Edmonton liquor store around 30 minutes prior to the LRT altercation.
EPS has since charged 33-year-old Morgan Banman with two counts of attempted murder, three counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and robbery.
“While we are grateful that no officers or members of the public were injured, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers all levels of law enforcement face on a daily basis,” says Inspector Jon Morrison with the EPS’ Investigative Response Team.
“This is also an example of how crime and disorder continue to impact all corners of our city; from the business that was robbed, to the LRT patrons who may have felt unsafe during their commutes, to the officers on proactive duty who were attacked with a weapon. This is why we must continue to have a proactive presence in public spaces.”
