Residents could see a police helicopter over their neighbourhoods north of Brampton as it makes “preventative” patrols to enhance community safety, police say.
The OPP said on Tuesday that a police helicopter will be making periodic patrols above Caledon. The aerial patrols are focused on “increasing police visibility, supporting officers on the ground, and helping to deter criminal activity,” the OPP says.
Police say air support allows police to monitor larger areas and respond quickly when needed.
“The OPP recognizes that helicopter patrols can be noticeable and appreciates the community’s understanding as these measures are carried out in the interest of public safety,” police say.
Officers say there is no known threat to the general public, and the aerial patrols “do not indicate a change to daily activities in the community.”
Anyone with information about suspected criminal activity in Caledon can contact the OPP by calling 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips may also be provided to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca. When you contact Crime Stoppers you stay anonymous, never have to testify, and could receive a $2,000 reward.
In 2024, the province announced $134 million for five new helicopters to help officers deal with violent carjackings, auto theft, street racing and impaired driving investigations in the Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa.
