If Winterburn Road makes up any part of your commute, you’ll want to make some adjustments as a three-kilometre stretch of the arterial road is closed until next year.
According to a construction notice from the City of Edmonton, the closure began today and affects Winterburn Road between 45th Avenue and 23rd Avenue NW. Drivers will be detoured via 199th Street, the notice says.
Construction plans include widening and paving 215th Street, installing streetlights, curbs, and gutters, and adding painted line markings.
Work is expected to continue through most of the year, with construction expected to wrap up by the end of February 2027.

In addition to helping drivers in neighbouring communities get around more easily, the upgrades will also support increased traffic flow in the area as a result of the $200-million expansion underway at the nearby River Cree Resort and Casino.
The major expansion is expected to bring a number of enhancements and attract more visitors, set to open in 2027.
The project includes a multi-storey hotel with 230 rooms, including more than 30 suites, expanded conference and meeting space that will double in size to 38,000 square feet with 10,000 square feet of outdoor space, a new pool area with two waterslides, and additional dining and beverage options.
