In an exciting back-and-forth game, the Saskatoon Blades bounced back to win game three in their playoff series against the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-3.

After Edmonton won the last game to tie the series, it was clear from the start of the game that there was a lot of tension. There were some stare-downs and minor scuffles between whistles, but both the Blades and Kings demonstrated discipline and did not allow things to escalate.

As expected, game three was close and hotly contested. Both teams exhibited impenetrable defence, and neither team was able to get on the board early. On Saskatoon’s third power-play opportunity, though, the home crowd erupted as David Lewandowski opened the scoring for the game. For the third time in as many games this series, Saskatoon led 1-0 at the end of the first period.

That score would be altered in the first minute of the second as Noa Ta’amu lifted one over the top of Evan Gardner to score for the Oil Kings and tie the game. Only two minutes later, Edmonton would take the lead with a goal from Ryan Gower that just trickled past Gardner to cross the goal line and give Edmonton its first lead of the game.

The next whistle would be a penalty to Jordan Martin for interference, and the Blades had an important penalty kill to survive. While Saskatoon killed the penalty, Edmonton scored just afterwards when a shot from Rhys Pederson was deflected into the net by Miroslav Holinka. With three unanswered goals on the board, the Blades launched an all-out offensive. While it increased pressure on the Oil Kings, the Blades’ assault lacked coordination, and Edmonton was just able to keep up and soon seized control of the game again.

As the second period began to wind down, though, Hunter Laing fed the puck to Rowan Calvert, who managed to just beat out the Edmonton defencemen with a burst of speed and put one past goaltender Ethan Simcoe to cut the Oil Kings’ lead in half. At the end of 40 minutes, the scoreboard read 3-2 with the Blades trailing, but building momentum.

That momentum would continue to build in the second and eventually pay off with Tyler Parr tying the game by shoving in a rebound from Jack Kachkowski. It was clear then that the Blades had regained control of the game.

If any were still unsure, Tristen Doyle eliminated those doubts with a power-play goal to take the lead for Saskatoon, 4-3.

That would be the last goal of the game, and the Blades would take the lead in the series two games to one.

The Blades and Oil Kings play game four tomorrow night at the SaskTel Centre.
