Tragedy is bringing family and friends of an Edmonton man together after a driver going the wrong way on Anthony Henday Drive struck his vehicle just over two weeks ago.
Friends are calling on the wider community to support Kuldeep Raj, a father of two young children, and his wife. His family and friends are fearful Raj may never recover from serious and life-altering injuries.
“We are just praying that he will be fine in one year or so, but we don’t know what’s going to happen, if he will be normal and the same person he was before,” Swati Kathuria, a friend, said outside the University of Alberta Hospital on Tuesday.
“He’s a great friend, a great father, and he doesn’t deserve everything that’s going on right now,” another friend, Megha Pawar, said.
Raj, 37, was driving home from his job at the casino in the early hours of March 14 when he was hit head-on by a driver going the wrong way on Anthony Henday Drive. The woman driving the other vehicle was declared dead on the scene.
Raj is also the owner of a liquor store and the sole breadwinner.
Raj was sent to the hospital with serious injuries and was previously in a coma.

“He has some brain injury and does not have memory,” Kathuria said. “He can’t remember about his wife either, so she’s a little bit shaken and she’s doing whatever she can for her kids.”
Other family members and friends are saddened, worried about their friend.
Pawan Kumar, Kuldeep’s brother, speaking to CityNews in Hindi and Punjabi, said Kuldeep is a great person who never wished ill on anyone, but this one bad incident has derailed the life of his family.

But they are heartened to see support for the family pouring in on GoFundMe. More than $30,000 so far been raised within just five days.
They are asking for more Edmontonians and Canadians to continue donating. Raj may be unable to work for years.
“At least they should be very free from the financials so they can focus on the family, they can focus on Kuldeep for his recovery and his and her daughters as well,” Kathuria said.
“He helped us also whenever we needed him, and we are here when he needs us.”
