Worried about the state of forests surrounding popular recreational areas, recreation enthusiasts recently cleaned up an illegal dumping site next to the Campbell River Motocross Track.

During the last weekend in March, 18 dedicated volunteers successfully removed 82,684 pounds of garbage from crown lands west of Campbell River.

The cleanup was spearheaded by Jason Brownlee from the Campbell River Motocross Association, who enlisted the help of Matthew Fox from the Four Wheel Drive Association of BC.

This follows a similar effort in December at Radar Hill, where 40 volunteers removed approximately 40,000 pounds of waste and abandoned vehicles. That cleanup was organized by Fox.

According to Brownlee, illegal dumping has been a persistent problem in this area for 15 years.

The Campbell River Motocross and Four Wheel Drive Association of BC organized volunteers and supplied diesel and food.

Contributions to make the cleanup happen were also made by local businesses. These included ABC Recycling, Pacific Waste Wood, Twin Cedars Auto, Hello Rentals, Swell Farms, Jagged Mountain Excavating, Pilon Tool Rentals and Wacor. Additionally, the Comox Strathcona Waste Management waived the tipping fee at the landfill.

A third cleanup is planned for the summer.
