Surrey crime stats for early 2026 show 25% increase in crimes against people compared to same period last year

The most recent crime statistics from the Surrey Police Service available for 2026 to February indicates a 25 per cent increase in crimes against people, year to date, to 1,302 cases this year compared to 1,040 over the same period last year.

Under the “Extortion: South Asian Series” category a 1,900 per cent increase shows for 2026 over 2025, and 850 per cent increase for shots fired.

February crime statistics, year to date, in 2026, marked three homicides, 19 shots fired, 91 cases of sexual assault/sexual interference, 589 assaults, 77 robberies, 60 extortions, and one case of arson/disregard to human life.

For the same period in 2025, there were no homicides, two shots fired cases, 84 cases of sexual assault/sexual interference, 504 assaults, 66 robberies, three extortions, and no arsons.

The total number of property-related crimes for these same periods increased by six per cent, to 3,047 in 2026 from 2,877 in 2025. Broken down by offence type, the SPS statistics indicate 123 business break-ins in 2026 ( 69 in 2025), 68 residential break-ins in 2026 (60 in 2025), 129 auto thefts in 2026 (134 in 2025), 475 thefts from autos in 2026 (388 in 2025), 29 cases of possession of property obtained by crime in 2026 (20 in 2025), 39 cases of identity theft and fraud in 2026 (25 in 2025), 25 cases of property-related arson in 2026 (31 in 2025) and 442 cases of mischief in 2026 (452 in 2025).

In other categories, in the same periods compared year over year, police in Surrey dealt with 969 mental health-related files in 2026 (653 in 2025) for an 18 per cent increase, 506 missing persons files in 2026 (413 in 2025), five fatal traffic crashes in 2026 compared to four in 2025, and 317 impaired driving files in 317 compared to 244 in 2025, for a 30 per cent increase.

All told, according to these most recently available crime statistics, there were 27,246 calls for police service in Surrey in the early part of 2026 compared to 27,308 in 2025.
