Bubba Wallace was involved in a Turn 4 crash at Martinsville Speedway that drew attention following comments from FOX’s Clint Bowyer.

Bubba Wallace came under focus after a late-race incident at Martinsville Speedway during the Cook Out 400 on March 29, 2026. The driver of the No. 23 Toyota for 23XI Racing finished 36th after contact with Carson Hocevar triggered a 12-car crash.

The result marked his second straight difficult finish after opening the season with four top-10 results. Following the race, veteran voices in the garage discussed the incident and pointed to lessons Wallace can apply moving forward, including advice tied to Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s approach.

Bubba Wallace’s Late Contact Leads to a Multi-Car Crash

The incident began on a late restart. Hocevar pushed Wallace three-wide into Turn 1, placing him in a tight position as the field entered the corner.

As the drivers reached Turn 4, Wallace drove deep into the corner and made contact with Hocevar’s rear bumper. The contact spun Hocevar, triggering a chain reaction behind them. Multiple cars were collected, ending Wallace’s race on the spot.

He finished 36th in the final order. Wallace later said the move came from frustration and described it as a misjudgment after the race. The incident drew attention due to the number of cars involved and the timing of the event.

Veterans Point to Dale Earnhardt Approach

Rick Mast addressed the situation on his podcast and pointed to Earnhardt’s mindset as a model for drivers.

“One of the best that was Earnhardt Sr. I mean, he was one of the best cerebral, you know, smart.”

He said drivers must focus on finishing races under the current system.

“The way the points are structured, now you know you can’t worry about winning a race again and getting in, you got to worry about finishing the race…..it’s just a matter of getting his mind right.”

Kevin Harvick also discussed the moment and explained what led to the contact.

“Bubba got riled up because Carson put him three wide on a restart and put him in a bad spot, and Bubba didn’t like that.”

He added that similar situations can happen to any driver.

“I’ve lost my temper a bunch of times at Martinsville and probably done stuff like this too.”

NASCAR Cup Standings Shift after Martinsville Result

The result affected Wallace’s position in the standings. He started the season near the top alongside teammate Tyler Reddick. After two difficult races, Wallace now sits 11th in the standings.

Harvick pointed to that change while discussing the bigger picture.

“It wasn’t long ago we were talking about Bubba and Tyler being one, two in the points. Bubba’s 11th in the points.”

The NASCAR Cup Series heads next to Bristol Motor Speedway. Teams will prepare for another short-track race where track position is key.

Wallace and his team have reviewed the Martinsville race as they prepare for the next event. The standings remain close, and results in the coming races will continue to shape the order.
