Two people are dead after a late-night shooting outside an elementary school in Brampton on Friday.

Peel Regional Police say officers were called to the area of Rutherford Road and Weybridge Trail shortly before 10:30 p.m.

Two victims were found suffering from gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.

In an update on Saturday, police say, the shooting is not believed to be random and appears to have been targeted.

Investigators say the incident began with an altercation involving multiple people on school property before gunfire broke out.

“There was some sort of altercation that occurred in the school grounds with several individuals, following that, a firearm or firearms were discharged and two victims were hit,” media officer Laurie McCann said.

Both victims were shot in the same area, although one attempted to flee before collapsing a short distance away, police said.

One victim is a man in his 20s, while the second is a male youth.

“The suspects fled the area prior to police arrival. We are unsure at this time if they fled on foot or got into a vehicle,” McCann said.

Police say the homicide unit has taken over the case and no suspect descriptions have been released.

“This is not a random act, and I can’t say 100 per cent, but it appears to be a targeted incident,” McCann added.

Officers remain in the area as the investigation continues, collecting evidence and speaking with potential witnesses.

Police are asking anyone who was nearby at the time or may have video footage to contact investigators.

“The scene is still very active. We have officers and investigators in the area canvassing for witnesses and gathering evidence. We are asking anyone that may have been in the area at the time of the shooting or may have some video surveillance or dash cam video to please contact police,” McCann said.
