Tributes for Sebastian Sajda, Surrey environmentalist and council candidate

Sebastian Sajda, an environmental leader in Surrey and former candidate for city council, has died, according to multiple reports on social media. Cause of death was not publicly shared.
A founding member of Friends of Bear Creek Park, Sajda was known for sounding alarms about environmental issues in Surrey, including the controversial work to build the 84 Avenue extension along the southern edge of the park starting in 2021.
Sajda, who often “live Tweeted” council meetings, was very plugged into issues at Surrey City Hall.
“So incredibly sad to hear of the passing of Sebastian Sajda,” Mayor Brenda Locke posted on Facebook on Thursday, April 2.
“Sebastian was a dedicated, good person who cared deeply about the environment and Surrey. He believed in democracy, fairness and a just society. He ran for office in Surrey with our Surrey Connect team in 2022. Gone way too soon. Sincere condolences to his family, especially his dear mom. RIP dear Sebastian.”
Tributes were also posted on the Friends of Bear Creek Park page.
“This news is shocking and comes with a collective loss,” an administrator wrote. “We imagine many of you have questions, but unfortunately we do not have further information. We ask for your patience while his friends and family grieve.”
In 2024 Sajda was a finalist for the Environmental Leader award during the Now-Leader’s annual Community Leader Awards. At the time he was vice-president of Force of Nature Alliance, after serving as president for three years.
A founding director of the West Coast Climate Action Network, Sajda also served on the city’s Environment and Climate Change Committee and was regularly involved in issues around environment, transit and housing in Surrey.
“Sebastian was unselfishly dedicated to the protection of our natural environments,” Friends of Bear Creek Park posted. “He campaigned countless hours and lead with a calm, strategic presence.”
