The Ottawa Senators are fighting for their playoff lives when they try to avoid a sweep in this series final on Sunday against the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Carolina Hurricanes go for the season series sweep against the Ottawa Senators on Sunday night. This is likely not the opponent the Senators were hoping to face as they try to get back on track and fight for a playoff spot. If the playoffs started today, these two would actually play in the first round, with the Hurricanes holding the top spot in the Eastern Conference with 104 points. Carolina is looking for its fourth straight win, and it’s already won four of its last five. Ottawa comes into this series finale with 88 points, losing four of its last five. The Senators hold the second and final Wild Card slot, but the Detroit Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers and Columbus Blue Jackets also have 88 points. That’s not to mention that the Washington Capitals are only a point behind Ottawa. Needless to say, this Wild Card race is still widely up for grabs in the East. The Hurricanes won this series in Game 2 on Feb. 3 in a 4-3 final. Ottawa got on the board first, but Carolina scored the next three goals. The Senators rallied with back-to-back goals to tie it early in the third, but Jordan Staal scored the go-ahead goal late in the final period.

Both teams will be playing on back-to-back nights in this finale. The Hurricanes are the only ones coming off a win, beating the New York Islanders 4-3 on Saturday. Seth Jarvis scored two goals and added an assist for the Hurricanes for the game’s top star. New York went ahead early in the second period, but Carolina came roaring back with three straight goals. Jarvis’ second goal of the night, 24 seconds into the third, put the Hurricanes ahead for good. They also won the series, leading 2-0, with the series finale on April 14.

The Senators are coming off a lopsided 4-1 loss at home against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday. Ryan Hartman scored twice for the Wild, and the Senators just couldn’t get past first-star goalie Jesper Wallstedt, who finished the game with 33 saves. The game wasn’t close at all, with Minnesota scoring the first four goals. Drake Batherson scored the lone goal for the Senators with less than five minutes left in regulation. Minnesota won the series 2-0 in the finale on Saturday. At least Ottawa doesn’t have to travel when playing this back-to-back.
