The Montreal Canadiens go for the top spot in the Atlantic Division and their ninth win in a row when they host the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.

The Montreal Canadiens are one of the hottest teams in the NHL and now they go for their eighth straight win on Sunday in the second game of this home-and-home series against the New Jersey Devils. The Canadiens are 9-1 in their last 10 games and they are second in the Atlantic Division standings. Montreal is only two points behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Lightning. The Devils, meanwhile, are fighting for their playoff lives. While they haven’t been eliminated yet, it is getting late. New Jersey will likely need to win out to have any shot at reaching the postseason and currently sit seven points back of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with 81 points. At least New Jersey picked up a point on Saturday when they lost to the Canadiens 4-3 in a shootout. Now, this series will shift to Montreal on Sunday with it tied 1-1 heading into the finale.

Montreal nearly blew the win in the first game of this home-and-home series. The Canadiens were dominating by the middle of the second period, up 3-0. But Dawson Mercer and Jack Hughes scored two goals late in the period to ignite a rally. Hughes’ goal was shorthanded, and he won the first star of the game while adding an assist. Timo Meier scored the equalizer with just 2:15 remaining in regulation. New Jersey gave it a great effort in the shootout, scoring two goals from Jesper Bratt and Hughes, but Oliver Kapanen got the last laugh with the game-winner for Montreal’s eighth straight. New Jersey lost despite outshooting Montreal 38-29, but 10 penalty minutes limited the Devils’ chances.

They’ll have to lay it all on the line on the road tonight with their season on the line.
