12 first-round matches are scheduled on day two of the ATP Monte Carlos Masters and there should be plenty of entertaining tennis for the fans to enjoy. As always, we will predict every match on the slate, including Andrey Rublev vs Nuno Borges and Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Francisco Cerundolo, but which players will advance to the next round?
ATP Monte Carlo Day 2 Predictions
Jiri Lehecka vs Emilio Nava
Head-to-head: first meeting
Emilio Nava came through a deciding set tiebreaker against David Goffin to advance to the main draw in what will be the Belgian’s final appearance at the ATP Monte Carlo Masters. This will be the American’s first main draw appearance at a clay Masters, and with already a quarterfinal on clay this season, he poses a serious threat to Jiri Lehecka. These two have never played on the ATP Tour, but have known each other since their junior days. Lehecka arrives in great form, but this will be his first match on clay this season, and it wouldn’t be a total surprise if he loses a set here.
Prediction: Lehecka in 3
Karen Khachanov vs Arthur Rinderknech
Head-to-head: Rinderknech 1-0 Khachanov
Karen Khachanov has shown glimpses of his best tennis a couple of times this season, but his usual consistency is missing these days. His record is also not that impress at this level on clay, despite some solid showings in the past, and it’s not going to be easy against a tough opponent who has had the better of him in the past. Arthur Rinderkech has never won a match here, but he is good enough to challenge anyone on his day and will have the vocal backing of the home crowd. This should be a very close match, and but Rinderkech might just get the better of the Russian.
Prediction: Rinderkech in 3
Joao Fonseca vs Gabriel Diallo
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Joao Fonseca is playing at the ATP Monte Carlo Masters for the first time, and he should havea good tournament. Admittedly, his results left a lot to be desired during the South American clay swing earlier this season, but he has gained momentum since then, and he must have learned a lot playing close matches against Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Gabriel Diallo is a dangerous player on quick surfaces and hits a big enough ball to do damage even in slower conditions, but his serve won’t be quite as effective on clay whilst his movement could be exposed. That should be enough to give Fonseca a decisiv eedge.
Prediction: Fonseca in 2
Stan Wawrinka vs Sebastian Baez
Head-to-head: Wawrinka 0-1 Baez
2014 champion Stan Wawrinka will be making his 16th and final main draw appearance at the ATP Monte Carlo Masters. Wawrinka has had great success in the past at this place, and his form looks better than it has been in the last couple of years. However, his draw is extremely tough. Sebastian Baez is a strong clay-courter and won’t give up any cheap points in the match. He will extend the rallies and test Wawrinka’s endurance. The Swiss player will have to be ultra-aggressive from the baseline and serve at a high rate to win this match. Once upon a time, you would have backed him to do it, but Wawrinka isn’t the force he once was.
Prediction: Baez in 3
