While I am not in the separate Alberta camp, I do see their rationale. Alberta is like Switzerland, jam-packed with economic benefits for all. Switzerland is bordered on all sides by Italy, Germany, Austria and France. No tidewater, yet uninhibited of exporting goods. Canada can’t even achieve that goal within our own borders. Switzerland is rich. Maybe take the hint.

What future holds
Where would separation in Alberta feelings be without the oil? Like it or not, oil is being phased out and the rate only varies. In 50 years (two-three generations), oil reliance (relevance) will significantly diminish in all but a few select circumstances. This is a fact, Jack. Go to your history books and visit Alberta in the 1960s and before to see what life was like and the province’s potential. Where do you want today’s 2-year-old Albertan to be? A Canadian with equalization provincially? An Albertan?

Anagram madness
Prime Minister Carney sure seems to love his anagrams. Take his Memorandum of Understanding or ‘MOU’ for example. Personally I think this agreement with Premier Smith was a scam to appease her until he could muster a majority government by hook or by crook and then it will be ‘TBA,’ To Bad Alberta. In that light I would humbly like to suggest more apt anagrams to describe his thinking that are closer to the truth. ‘FAD,’ Federal Appeasement Document. Meaning, keep them happy for now. ‘SAP,’ Suckers Appeasement Proposal. This would provide a good laugh around the table at his next Laurentian Elite dinner party. And last but not least, ‘DOG,’ no disrespect intended to our fur babies. Document Of Gullibility. Kinda says it all, don’t you think? If anyone believes Carney and his eastern Liberal colleagues are going to ever agree to anything that helps Alberta’s oil and gas industries get our products to a more world hungry market I have a feeling you’re going to be sorely disappointed. He will continue catfishing us for years until we finally get a Progressive Conservative government. If Alberta is still a part of Canada by then.

To infinity and beyond
I remember watching the Apollo 11 moon landing at a time when TV’s Star Trek was going off the air and thinking that science fiction is now reality. Of course, after winning the space race and several lunar missions later, manned space travel was limited to upper orbits of our planet. Now, once again, humankind is on a journey to our moon with a Canadian astronaut on board and although this mission does not involve a moon landing, it is the prelude to one. With war raging in Ukraine and the Middle East, this renewed space travel demonstrates that we are capable of better things and provides a glimmer of hope for humankind. Godspeed, Artemis II.

Unethical Carney
PM Carney will turn a blind eye to China’s systemic violations of human rights and the slave/forced labour camps as long as he can achieve his coveted majority. This tells Canadians what kind of man Mark Carney truly is. He is willing to sacrifice anyone, including Canadians, to satisfy his lust for power. PM Carney is morally empty, decency and fair play long ago he abandoned, any flicker of integrity has been snuffed out, his appalling kowtowing to Xi Jinping. I can see why Carney considers himself a globalist, he sure isn’t Canadian.

It’s a stretch
RE: ATA president worried about Bill 25’s impact on schools (April 1). Seriously, what is Jason Schilling talking about? I think it’s a very, very long stretch from keeping out classrooms politically neutral, to not teaching the Holocaust. Seriously, he asks what it means to be neutral. He’s supposed to be an educator. Can I have my money back?

Self-contradicting
Canada talks the talk and walks the walk with supporting Ukraine against Russia, but then we make trade deals with India and China. The two countries that buy the most oil from Russia, supporting the Russian war machine. Aren’t we just supporting both sides of the war? But Trump is bad?

Figuring out Iran
How incompetent are Trump and his clowns? The U.S. couldn’t figure out Tunisia, Iraq and Afghanistan. What makes them think they’ll figure out Iran? The culture of the Arab people, especially the Persians, is for them to never give up, to fight until the end. Right or wrong, awful regime for sure, but it’s Iran who will decide when the war is over and when to open the Strait of Hormuz, not the U.S. Trump and his cronies still can’t figure it out and as a result this war could last much longer than the world wants.

Buckle up
As a professional driver with over a million kilometres of safe driving under my belt I am horrified on a daily basis by the bad driving habits I witness. After people pass their driving test they seem to totally forget the rules of the road. There should be mandatory proficiency testing every time people renew their license. Since I got my steering papers 50 years ago, conditions, traffic volume and signage have changed a great deal. Driving skills and knowledge need to keep pace for our roads to maintain some semblance of safety. Safe and courteous driving habits are a responsibility we need to foster.
