Aaron Ramsey is now a former footballer.

The former Arsenal and Wales midfielder has announced his retirement at the age of 35.

The Cardiff native has been without a club since departing Pumas this past October.

“This has not been an easy decision to make,” Ramsey wrote on social media. “After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football.”

A product of the Cardiff City academy, Ramsey made his senior debut for the club in 2007, becoming the Bluebirds’ youngest-ever player at 16. He joined Arsenal in 2008 in a nearly £5 million move. He would go on to spend 11 seasons at the Emirates, winning three FA Cups.

Following his departure from Arsenal, he spent three seasons at Juventus, winning a Scudetto in 2020 and a Coppa Italia in 2021, before stints at Rangers, Nice and a return to Cardiff. His move to Mexico last summer ended after just six Liga MX appearances with his Pumas contract cancelled by mutual agreement.

Perhaps Ramsey’s biggest impact came internationally with the Dragons.

“It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it,” Ramsey wrote. “It would not have been possible without the incredible input of all the managers I have played under and all the staff who have helped me in many ways.”

Ramsey made his senior debut for Wales at 17. He went on to make 86 appearances, the sixth-most all-time, and scored 21 goals. At 20, Ramsey was named Wales captain, becoming the youngest player to wear the armband for the country. He would go on to play in both Euro 2016 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Wales’ first appearance in the tournament since 1958.
