The National Film Board of Canada is honoured to present a special premiere screening of the new nêhiyawêwin (Cree language) subtitled version of Gil Cardinal’s documentary, Foster Child, at the 2026 Dreamspeakers International Indigenous Film Festival. This is the first time an Indigenous-helmed NFB film has been subtitled in Cree syllabics. Aretha Greatrix, program director for Dreamspeakers, and Coty Savard, a producer with the National Film Board, shared details with Global News Morning Edmonton.
