The City of Calgary says it will conduct a proactive inspection of a two-kilometre section of the Bearspaw South Feeder Main this week using a robotic device, with no impact to water service expected if all goes as planned.

The section is running from the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant to the 33 Avenue N.W. pump station and is made of steel. The City said it was not inspected at the same time as prestressed concrete cylinder pipe segments assessed in 2024.
The inspection will use a robotic PipeDiver that measures pipe wall thickness using ultrasonic technology while the pipe remains full of water.
The device is expected to travel the length of the pipe in approximately two hours while collecting data.
Results are expected within a month and will inform future plans.
The City said water restrictions are not anticipated. It said temporary restrictions may be required if issues are encountered and demand needs to be reduced until the feeder main is brought back into service.

The City said residents may also consider collecting rainwater for outdoor use as an alternative to treated drinking water, noting a $50 rebate is available for eligible rain barrel purchases.
