Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw is scheduled to speak at a news conference Wednesday afternoon after a Jewish-owned North York restaurant was shot at last Friday.
Police said in a news release that Demkiw will speak at 1 p.m., alongside Chief Supt. Katherine Stephenson of intelligence services and Supt. Ryan Forde of organized crime enforcement.
Police were initially called to Old Avenue Restaurant in the area of Avenue Road and Brooke Avenue at 1:28 a.m. on April 3.
Investigators say officers responded to reports of gunshots heard in the area, and bullet holes were found in the front entrance of the restaurant.
No injuries were reported. Police said at the time that the gun and gangs unit was investigating, and they had increased patrols in the area.
In a statement issued after the incident, the president and CEO of the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto Adam Minsky said the organization was “horrified” to hear the business was shot at.
“We are repeatedly witnessing firsthand that when hate is normalized, this is the kind of terror that results,” Minsky’s statement read.
“All Canadians should be extremely concerned by what’s happening in our country right now. This is not solely a threat to the Jewish community — it’s a threat to every Canadian who wants to live their lives in peace and safety.”
Last month, police in Toronto and York Region said they were investigating shots fired at three Toronto-area synagogues.
News of the shootings drew widespread condemnation from politicians representing all three levels of government and, shortly after, Ottawa earmarked $10 million to help Jewish communities bolster security at gathering places.
Those shootings caused building damage but no injuries were reported.
