Victims of crimes have a new “safe space” to interact with officers in a “trauma-informed” setting north of Brampton.
The initiative is a joint effort by the Caledon OPP and Caledon-Dufferin Victim Services (CDVS), giving victims a quiet, private, and supportive environment within the Caledon detachment.
The space is designed to reflect a “trauma-informed and culturally responsive approach,” offering access to religious, faith-based, cultural, and nondenominational comfort items “to meet the diverse needs of the community.”
Stocked with items like sacred texts, prayer mats, rosaries, grounding tools and blankets, and a dedicated area for children with backpacks filled with essential items to support individuals in need during a challenging situation.
“The environment is intended to help reduce anxiety, support emotional regulation, and promote a sense of safety while statements are taken,” the OPP says.
The space will help police foster “a more holistic and compassionate approach to community safety.”
