Bear Creek Park Stadium will host inaugural events this spring as excavation work continues west and south of the new blue track.
Throwing event facilities are being built for javelin, hammer, discus and shot put competitions, along with perimeter fencing. Summer completion is targeted.
Excavators worked the dirt Tuesday afternoon (April 7) as about a dozen people walked and sprinted on the rubberized track.
Several events are planned at the new stadium this spring including two Unity FC soccer games, school track meets, sports day, 5KM race and flag football practices, according to Laurie Cavan, Surrey’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture.
Men’s and women’s soccer teams of Unity FC, a semi-pro club in BC Premier League (BCPL), will play a Surrey Schools Series at the stadium with two matinee games May 13-14, so local schools can attend.
“For many of these students, this will be their first live sporting event,” said Kelcey Brade, Unity FC co-owner and president.
“We have been working closely with Surrey Schools, and we currently have over 2,500 students and staff confirmed to attend over the two days.”
General public tickets are $10 for the games, to have Unity FC women playing Vancouver Rise FC Academy on Wednesday, May 13, followed by Unity FC Men vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC Academy on Thursday, May 14. Both games start at 11 a.m., gates open at 10.
The Surrey Schools Series is supported by the City of Surrey and Surrey Schools, Brade noted. “Since moving to Surrey in 2024, our ownership group has been committed to making Unity FC ‘Surrey’s Own,’ and these games — taking place just one month before Canada welcomes the world for the World Cup — are a major part of that outreach.”
Unity FC teams typically plays games at Cloverdale Athletic Park, including home-openers Saturday, April 11.
At Bear Creek, work to build throwing event facilities “is an exciting step forward for the City, as it will enable us to bid for higher-level athletic events,” Cavan told the Now-Leader.
“Advancing sport hosting bids and events aligns directly with the City’s Sport Tourism Strategy, so these upgrades are part of our broader vision to bolster Surrey’s reputation as a top destination for sporting events.”
In February, Surrey council awarded a $1,642,557 contract to New Rhodes Construction Inc. to build field throwing areas and fencing at the stadium.
