Time is running out to take a quick step inside and look around a tiny home at Celebration Square in Mississauga’s downtown core.

On the Family Day holiday back in February, Habitat for Humanity dropped off one of its tiny homes at the popular outdoor City Centre venue. The idea was to leave it there for a couple of months to let people take little tours of the scaled-down abode.

Now, there’s only a few days left for people to check out the 225-sq.-ft. studio‑style unit, which was built by local high school students under the direction of Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga-Dufferin.

The tiny home will remain at Celebration Square and open to tours through April 18. Visitors can still take a look inside the little home, also known as a garden suite, Thursdays and Fridays from 3-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Tiny homes/garden suites are allowed in Mississauga with the required city permits, officials say.

After taking a tour of the small residential unit at Celebration Square, people can speak with Habitat for Humanity staff “to learn how they’re built and whether one could work on your property,” organizers of the tiny home showcase say.

The self-contained units can be purchased by homeowners and installed in their backyard for extra living space, according to Habitat for Humanity.

The tiny homes include a kitchen, living area, sleeping space and washroom.

“Tiny homes are a good option for homeowners looking for an accessible way to age in place, families who need extra space or anyone looking to add a rental unit for extra income,” officials said earlier in an online description of the Celebration Square event and the tiny homes.

City of Mississauga officials said in a post to social media on Thursday the tiny display home at the square “shows how small spaces can still offer everything you need.”
