On the SportsCage, Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Corey Mace revealed whether he evaluates a player more by his eyes and testing numbers or by his gut feeling.
“It’s not an exact science when it comes to drafting players. You’re going to have a little bit of both. You trust your eyes, and you trust the film, and then some of them is a gut feel, like I got a feeling about this kid. Sometimes it’s through a multitude of things, they play for somebody who got a lot of respect for, and they speak highly of somebody, and it matches the film, and you go off of that. We do so much preparing before we actually make the draft pick as a staff and as an organization that you want to get those gut ones out of the way in a mock draft.”
“When the bullets are flying and the time’s on your side, you’re calm in this situation, the third-year Riders head coach continues. “It’s a credit to our football ops, the JOs, the Kyle Carsons, Jordan Greenly, Larry Dean, our video departments, and our coaching staff’s hands-on. It’s an educated decision by the time it’s done, but certainly, you fall in love with people early, then fall out of love, and then fall back into love with somebody else when you see them. It’s a cool process.”
