Province approves $1.9 million for Delta schools upgrade plans

The province is funding five minor capital projects at Delta schools, to the tune of more than $1.9 million.

The funds represents about 27 per cent of the total $6,991,650 fiscal investment in facilities and infrastructure the school district asked for in September.

On Tuesday evening (April 7), school board trustees passed a bylaw authorizing spending on the five projects, a step required under the Ministry of Education and Child Care project procurement procedures and guidelines in order to unlock the funding.

The projects supported by the ministry include $900,000 to renew the roof at Cliff Drive Elementary, $480,000 to replace gym rooftop units at Brooke and Gibson elementary schools, $240,000 to replace the chiller at Delta Secondary, $200,000 to replace the playground at Sunshine Hills Elementary, and $100,000 for food equipment and infrastructure improvements for Heath, Jarvis and Port Guichon elementary schools.

The district submitted a list of 14 projects for provincial funding.

Those not chosen by the ministry include replacing heat pumps across the district, HVAC upgrades at Burnsview Secondary and South Delta Secondary, roof renewal at Holly Elementary, replacing a high-voltage transformer at Sands Secondary, replacing AC and UV units at Chalmers Elementary, re-piping HVAC at various secondary schools, upgrading direct digital controls at various schools, adding accessibility features to the playground at Annieville Elementary, and replacing the playground at Gibson Elementary.
