Having celebrated 10 years on the Mississauga festival scene in 2025, organizers of what has become the largest Japanese festival in North America anticipate more success as they look ahead to the next decade.

Festival organizers say they’re once again expecting more than 100,000 people to attend when the 2026 version of Japan Festival Canada comes to Celebration Square in the city’s downtown core.

Under the theme “Connecting Japan to the World — and to the Future,” the two-day festival takes place this year the weekend of Aug. 15–16. Hours are 12 noon-11 p.m. on the Saturday and 11 a.m.-7 p.m. on the Sunday. Admission is free.

“This theme reflects three key connections: tradition and innovation, local and global, and present and future generations,” organizers wrote in an event overview submitted to the City of Mississauga this week in which they touched base and confirmed the booking as they do each year in advance of the annual festival. “Japan’s cultural and creative strength continues to evolve beyond tradition into a global force shaping the future.

“Japan Festival Canada acts as a bridge that transforms cultural heritage into future opportunities, both socially and economically.”

Once again, the annual festival will bring renowned Japanese cultural figures, artists and performers to Mississauga for the summertime event. Their presence will offer visitors to the festival “a rare opportunity to experience the heart of Japanese culture through live demonstrations, performances and discussions,” officials with Japan Expo Canada Inc., the festival organizer, said earlier.

Each year, the Japanese festival also showcases that country’s rich traditions, cutting-edge technology and culinary excellence.

Held at Celebration Square since its inception in 2016, with the exception of 2020 and 2021 when it was held virtually due to COVID-19, Japan Festival Canada took a big step up attendance-wise with more than 100,000 people in 2022. Similar attendance marks were realized at the festival in 2023 through last year — and organizers anticipate the same in 2026.

The year prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2019, saw some 90,000 visitors attend the festival.

“Since its launch in 2016, the festival has grown into a landmark event attracting over 100,000 attendees annually,” organizers noted, adding those who attend include:

Local Canadian audiences.
Japanese diaspora communities.
International visitors.
Government officials and industry leaders.

Organizers also pointed out recently that Japan Festival Canada is “not only the largest Japanese cultural festival in Canada, but also a high-impact cultural and business platform connecting Japan to North America and the world.”

Furthermore, they said, the annual festival “is built on the power of connection — between people, cultures and ideas. Every interaction contributes to cultural understanding, economic opportunity and a shared global future.”

The festival also features numerous food vendors each year. More information on them and scheduled entertainers for 2026 will be available early in the summer.

In its inaugural year in 2016, the festival, held on a single day at the time, attracted some 40,000 visitors and was a resounding success, according to organizers. They say that event “garnered significant attention throughout Canada and North America.”
