Former Toronto Maple Leaf Kris Newbury being added to sports hall of fame in Brampton

Former NHL player and Toronto Maple Leaf Kris Newbury will be among this year’s additions to the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame.

The city announced on Friday that Newbury, who played with the Leafs, the Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers, is one of three inductees to the hall of fame for 2026.

He will be joined by Joe Caruso, a lacrosse veteran who captained the Brampton Excelsiors to their first-ever Minto Cup championship, and Derek Perera, head coach of the Ontario Schools Cricket Association.

“Their achievements and dedication have helped shape Brampton’s proud sporting legacy and continue to inspire athletes across our community,” Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said in a statement, and encouraged residents to attend the induction ceremony next month.

Currently located at the CAA Centre with plans to move into the Victoria Park Arena after renovations, the Sports Hall of Fame is a tribute to local athletes, coaches and trailblazers who have made significant contributions to sports.

Now in its 45th year, the 2026 inductees will be honoured for their achievements at a ceremony on May 5 at the City Hall Atrium and Conservatory. To register to attend, email [email protected].

Construction on the $43-million Victoria Park Arena facility and new Brampton Sports Hall of Fame started early last year, and will replace the old arena demolished in 2021.
