DENISON, Texas (KXII) – Junior boxers from all across America came to Denison on Saturday for a competition hosted by veteran Andre Luper and “The Camp.”
“This is where all the kids come together and get to show their skills,” Luper said.
The tournament featured boxers ages eight and up, and crowds filled the Grayson College gym with energy and excitement.
James “Rabbit” Brown, an inductee into the Universal Martial Arts Hall of Fame, said the sport and his coaching team teach one central concept.
“Discipline,” he said. “Discipline is what brings leadership.”
Luper says that core concept helps him see a bright future—one that begins with gloves on and guard up.
“We are big on discipline with the kids, building up their character, building up their self-esteem so they can be something in life,” he said.
Brown believes the lessons learned in the ring and at practice will propel his students to success.
“We’re not just teaching somebody how to punch, we’re teaching somebody how to lead,” he said, “we’re teaching them how to be leaders, how to be men, how to be women. I could be standing by the next president of the United States of America.”
