Pop music artist Jessie J has given a heartbreaking interview weeks after undergoing surgery for breast cancer. While chatting with The Sunday Times, the Price Tag singer gave an inside look at how she’s been coping with the diagnosis and the aftermath.
“The other night, mum was massaging my boob for me, because I can’t touch the scars. And I started sobbing, ‘I can’t believe this has happened.’ She was like, ‘I wish it was me,’ and then I’m crying, she’s crying … I’m so glad it’s not her,” she told the outlet.
After finding a cancerous tumor in her breast, Jessie J, 37, underwent a mastectomy. She was relieved to hear that she had clean margins — that is, the surrounding tissue taken during the surgery was free of cancer cells. However, Jessie J is remaining cautiously optimistic at this time.
“People think, once you’ve got the all-clear, now it’s done,” she says. “But I’ve got another surgery and I need to heal, so I have to figure out the rest of this year,” she said, adding that “there’s a one in two chance” that her cancer will return sometime in the future.
Jessie J initially revealed her diagnosis on social media.
“Before ‘No Secrets’ came out, I was diagnosed with early breast cancer. I’m highlighting the word early. Cancer sucks in any form, but I’m holding on to the word ‘early,'” she said in a candid Instagram post on June 3.
Earlier this month, Jessie J was hospitalized due to symptoms of a blood clot. Thankfully, doctors didn’t find anything super concerning. The singer chose to leave the hospital after doctors gave her medication to treat an infection. She’s been recovering at home while she awaits her next surgery, which will help re-shape her breast following her mastectomy.
