Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya revealed on Monday that the nation is actively working towards reviving the F1 Indian Grand Prix. A F1 race could be held as early as 2027 at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida.

The minister disclosed that at least three separate organizations have expressed a keen desire to manage the facility, which has sat largely dormant in terms of top-tier single-seater racing for over a decade.

Mandaviya unequivocally stated that the inaugural comeback race would take place at the Uttar Pradesh track, marking a definitive timeline for the sport’s return.

The journey to revive the Indian Grand Prix comes after the event was unceremoniously axed following the 2013 season. It took place for three years, with Sebastian Vettel winning all three Indian GPs.

The Adani Group has taken significant steps to take control of the Formula 1 track in Greater Noida from the Jaypee group. Experts believe that this will breathe fresh life into the high-octane sport in India, which has seen its global audience explode since Liberty Media took the helm in 2017.

“There will be an F1 race in India in 2027. First race will be at Buddh International Circuit,” Mandaviya said.

The synergy between the government and the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) appears to be the engine driving this movement. Following a crucial summit in March, Vicky Chandhok, who was at the forefront when F1 first arrived in India, noted the ministry’s immense enthusiasm.

“We explored the potential of bringing Formula One and MotoGP to India. The ministry is enthusiastic and clear that, given India’s advancement in technology, it deserves the best sports,” Chandhok said.

“They sought to understand the challenges and assess our organisational capabilities. The minister and the ministry are very supportive.”

Sources suggest that the FMSCI is currently facilitating a high-level meeting between Mandaviya and the sport’s powerbroker, Stefano Domenicali.

“The revival effort is also being aligned with national sporting priorities. Integrating motorsports within this broader framework could help nurture talent early and create a strong pipeline of drivers, technicians, and motorsport professionals,” PTI quoted a source as saying.

When is the next F1 race?

The next F1 race will be the Miami GP sprint event that commences on May 1 with the main event on May 3.

It will be held at the Miami International Autodrome.

This event will be held more than a month after the last race in Japan.
