Shoppers are being told to keep alert for possibly aggressive geese nesting around a Brampton mall.
The arrival of spring and warmer weather also means the return of migrating Canada Geese, making their nests in parks and near freshwater sources.
But the iconic Canadian birds also make their homes in urban areas due to an abundance of food and few natural predators, Brampton Animal Services says.
And at least one family of fowls has led to warnings for visitors to a Brampton mall.
A pair of Canada Geese nesting around the Shoppers World Brampton mall have led to signs warning guests to give them a wide berth. A photo of one of the geese was posted on the social media site Reddit, showing one of the geese sitting in front of a mall entrance.
“They can be very aggressive and inflict injury, especially when threatened and/or protecting their nesting area, young and mate,” a sign at Shoppers World reads, warning shoppers to “beware.”
The geese have been in the area for weeks and some have made the Shoppers World area their nesting sites for years.
Brampton Animal Services warns that Canada Geese are protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act, meaning it is illegal to harm geese, their eggs or their nests without a permit from Canadian Wildlife Services.
Shoppers are asked to “please be very careful” if encountering Canada Geese.
