Surrey Food Bank wants you to Fill the Bay at new community event May 21

Save the date of Thursday, May 21 to attend a new community event hosted by Surrey Food Bank at the charity’s warehouse in Newton.
Fill the Bay, hosted by Global BC’s Mark Madryga alongside Howard Blank, will feature an afternoon of games, food trucks and more from 3 to 6 p.m.
“We’re especially excited to share that our signature event is coming home — and with it, a new name,” food bank executive director Kim Savage reports.
“What you’ve known as Breakfast with the Bank is now called Fill the Bay. We’ll be hosting it right here at the food bank: a little different, a little more hands-on, and a whole lot more connected to the work your support makes possible.”
The goal is to bring the community together “at a critical moment to stock shelves, build momentum and make sure families can count on food in the months ahead,” says a post on surreyfoodbank.org/fill-the-bay, where registration is appreciated.
“Step inside the Surrey Food Bank and be part of a live, hands on moment where your contribution immediately supports families across Surrey and North Delta.”
Event sponsors are sought for Fill the Bay, 13478 78 Ave., Surrey.
Surrey Food Bank history dates back to 1981 when a coalition of churches opened a food cupboard in Surrey in response to an economic downturn. Two years later, the Surrey Food Bank Society was formed and opened in a small building on King George Highway.
“What began as a temporary solution has grown into a 23,000 square foot facility in Newton, three community depots, a fleet of vehicles, hundreds of volunteers, and a dedicated staff team,” the website says.
“Today, the Surrey Food Bank distributes food to approximately 1,200 families each week and supports schools, shelters, missions, and transition houses serving vulnerable populations.”
