Police say a report of an individual carrying a large knife at Mount Royal University on Monday afternoon led to a shelter-in-place order before officers determined the person was a staff member working as a chef and lifted the alert.
Officers responded at approximately 2:45 p.m. on April 13, 2026, to reports of an individual with a large knife at the university, located at 4825 Mount Royal Gate S.W.
The area was contained and, after confirming witness reports, a shelter-in-place order was issued for the campus and surrounding communities.
Officers then received information identifying the individual as a staff member working as a chef for the university. The order was lifted after that information was verified.
“This incident highlights how seriously we treat reports of potential threats. Our officers responded quickly to ensure the safety of the campus and surrounding community,” said Insp. Darren Smith of the Calgary Police Service Real Time Operations Centre.
“Although we now know the public was not in danger, our officers are well trained for these situations,” Smith said.
One man was taken into custody at the scene. Police said the investigation is ongoing and charges may be laid.
Police said they appreciate the cooperation of Mount Royal University staff and the public while the situation was resolved.
Mount Royal University said in a statement it co-operated with police during the response.
“We appreciate the prompt response from the CPS as we worked closely with them throughout their response. We understand the stress this incident has caused our students and employees and are grateful for this positive outcome,” the university said.
