Brampton’s own A. J. Lawson has been handed a standard NBA contract ahead of the Toronto Raptors’ upcoming playoff run.
The team made the announcement on Saturday, saying the 25-year-old Brampton native has signed a standard NBA contract in his second year with the squad.
The guard from Brampton signed a two-way contract with the Raptors in December 2024, which was converted to a two-year deal so he would be eligible for the playoffs that year. He spent most of the 2025-26 season in the G League with the Raptors 905.
Lawson played the last regular season game as a permanent member of the team on Sunday. The Raptors’ will start their 2026 NBA playoff run against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday.
Lawson played in 24 games during the regular season and averaged 4.2 points with 1.8 rebounds per contest.
Lawson’s path to the NBA and suiting up with his childhood team started when he went undrafted out of South Carolina in 2021, then signed with the College Park Skyhawks, the G-League affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks, the next year.
He then played a season with the Guelph Nighthawks of the Canadian Elite Basketball League before joining the Dallas Mavericks’ summer league team and spending time with the Minnesota Timberwolves before signing the two-way deal.
Lawson was one of four Raptors to earn a double-double when Toronto routed the Washington Wizards 119-104 on March 10 during the 2025 season, and finished with 32 points and 12 rebounds, both career highs, off the bench.
