People in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon are being advised to stay away from all watercourses for the next couple of days as heavy rain is expected to increase the risk of localized flooding near the Credit River.

Credit Valley Conservation, the organization that protects natural areas and watercourses in Peel’s three municipalities and several other communities, issued a flood outlook statement on Monday night alerting residents to potentially unsafe/dangerous conditions due to the heavy rainfall.

The statement, which remains in effect until end of day on Thursday or until further notice, noted rain that fell in the region late Monday night into early Tuesday and more expected in the coming days have increased the chances of dangerous conditions near water.

In its statement, CVC said Monday night “10 to 20 mm of rain is forecasted and there is a risk of isolated thunderstorms. Soil in the watershed is saturated and water levels of the Credit River and tributaries are elevated after spring thaw and recent rain events. Localized flooding may occur in flood-prone and low-lying areas. Streams and rivers may become dangerous. Stay away from all watercourses.”

A flood outlook statement is issued as an early notice of the potential for flooding based on weather forecast of heavy rain, snow melt, high wind or other conditions that could lead to high runoff, ice jams, shoreline flooding or erosion, CVC officials added.

Following the rain that fell Monday night into Tuesday, “another round of heavy rain, including thunderstorms, may affect parts of the Credit River watershed on Wednesday and Thursday,” the conservation authority noted.

The additional rainfall “could result in runoff, further increasing water levels and flows in rivers and creeks. While neither significant flooding of the Credit River nor its tributaries is expected, there is a possibility of localized flooding in flood-prone and low-lying areas … People are warned to stay away from all watercourses and to keep children and pets away.”

CVC said it will continue to closely monitor both the weather and water levels across the region.
