A flood watch has been issued for possibly dangerous conditions near rivers and creeks in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon.
Credit Valley Conservation, the organization that protects natural areas and watercourses in Peel’s three municipalities and several other communities, issued the watch on Tuesday evening.
Urban streams and rivers may be dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges and dams, the CVC said. People should stay away from all watercourses and keep children and pets away.
A strong low-pressure system entered the Credit River watershed Tuesday morning and brought 15 to 30 millimetres of rainfall with localized thunderstorms, the watch statement reads.
Another round of heavy rainfall and potential thunderstorms may affect parts of the Credit River watershed, with up to 20 to 30 millimetres of precipitation expected Tuesday night and into Wednesday.
Higher amounts of rain are possible in areas impacted by thunderstorms.
Soil in the watershed is currently saturated and water levels of the Credit River and major tributaries are elevated and continue to rise.
At several locations, water levels exceeded the top of the bank – bankfull level threshold (Lower Credit River, West Credit River).
A localized flooding risk will continue, especially if new thunderstorms form, the CVC said.
The flood watch will be in effect through Thursday or until further notice.
