Police believe the driver of a car that struck and killed a man early Wednesday morning as he walked across a major intersection in Mississauga’s north end might not know they hit a person.
Speaking to the media at Hurontario Street and Derry Road shortly after 9 a.m., a Peel Regional Police spokesperson said it was “dark and rainy” when the pedestrian, described as being in his 40s, was likely struck by a vehicle as he crossed the road sometime before 3:45 a.m.
A second car then ran over the man, who was already lying in the middle of the intersection, police said. That call came in to police at around 3:45 a.m.
The police spokesperson told reporters the driver of the second vehicle remained on the scene and cooperated fully with investigators.
Police are now appealing to any motorists who believe they may have unknowingly struck the man in the early morning hours to come forward.
Investigators also want to speak with any witnesses or drivers who were in the area at the time and might have dashcam footage.
The major intersection remains closed while the Peel police Major Collision Bureau is on the scene investigating the fatality.
Westbound Derry Road is closed at Hurontario Street, southbound Hurontario Street is closed at Kingsway Drive, eastbound Derry Road is closed at Maritz Drive and northbound Hurontario Street is closed at Admiral Boulevard.
